Float

2009

Water, waterproof sheet, plywood, wood, FRP

Photography #1/4: Ken Kato

Viewers step on the floor, which floats on water, as they enter the exhibition space. They can stand and linger on it.
The floating floor was made with plywood and had a hollow construction resembling a wooden canoe or surfboard.
The idea for this project comes from a sensation which I felt during a flood in my childhood in New Delhi, India. During a monsoon our house was surrounded by water. The water level came up to the floor of our house and stopped. I was momentarily under the illusion that my house was floating.
